Behold! The coffee roasting warlocks of Coffee Wizardz! Owners Sam Brown and Chris Christen are Wisconsin-proud roasters who started small, triumphed through the Covid-19 pandemic, and established themselves as a powerhouse to the coffee scene in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In 2019, they created a Kickstarter to purchase a coffee roaster that became successful. As of 2021, they now have an established cafe/roastery located in Green Bay.

One of the coffees, Congo, is what I'll be reviewing for you guys. Just by observation, you can sense the founders have a love for the fantastical with the mixture of the alchemist logo alongside the font and choice of Latin proverbs.

This SL-34 varietal comes from the Mapendo farm in South Kivu, Congo. Interestingly, this particular farm is 40% women and provides living for many of the workers. This particular region of African coffee was one I hadn't had any experience with but I will say I was not disappointed by so I was excited to try it.

  • Color: dark in its most common state

  • Aroma: cocoa, grape, floral, plum, herbaceous

  • Taste: chocolate graham cracker, citrus forward finishes sweeter more bittersweet chocolate

  • Body: mild acidity (hitting the sides of tongue) settling in the middle of the tongue, light to medium body

  • Aftertaste: lingers with a more berry/chocolate note

This felt as though it danced around my tongue the same way a Sour Patch kid does. I did this as a blind tasting - not aware of the tasting notes and found the lime very abrasive from the beginning and finishing strong with more bread/cracker afterwards (noted as brown sugar). Not a common cup, I found this to be a great cup to start the day!
