I got you there, didn't I? Taking a quick escape from the reality of America and wandering the historic streets of Copenhagen to stumble upon a local coffee roasting company? Sadly, not yet.

I was offered a sample of one of their roasts from my current boss who has a subscription for receiving different kinds of coffee beans. As it fits, I figured I'd put a quick post together and let you guys know my thoughts.

Just to give you a brief background, April Coffee is located in Copenhagen, Denmark and was established by founder Patrik Rolf: a winner of World Brewers Cup, former barista now coffee roaster, and self-publishing author of his book, "From Nerd to Pro: A Coffee Journey".

So, yes, these are technically an older harvest of beans but don't let that freak you out. It's actually quite common that beans, after they're harvested, can be kept up to 1-2 years old (properly contained, of course).

These beans, in particular, came from the Volcan Azul farm located in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Farmer Alejo Castro prides himself in sustainable farming, trade, and keeping the neighboring forestland safe promoting biodiversity and preservation.

This was my first experience drinking a H1 variety of coffee beans. H1 coffee is a Central-American hybrid of two beans: the T5296 and the Ethiopian Rume Sudan. It's known for being a more resistant coffee plant towards a common enemy of leaf rust. It also yields higher production of beans. I know the names of the varietals for coffee beans sounds like a different language, but I'll cover that in a separate post in the future.

  • Mouthfeel/body: lightweight body, strong sour acidic notes hitting the back/left tongue receptors with a syrupy film

  • Color: extremely light in color, closer to an amber hue

  • Aroma: plum, raisin, cardamom, floral

  • Flavors: honey, lime, melon

  • Aftertaste: juicy (activating saliva glands) with lingering sweeter note

As for preference, I wouldn't repurchase but since this was a tasting, but this is suitable for coffee drinkers who prefer a less robust cup with more sweeter notes such as lighter roasts.
